1300: Protective Capacities for In-Home Safety Assessment Booster Shot

Agenda Welcome and Introductions Protective Capacities Review Practical Practice Summary and Evaluation

Learning Objectives Participants will be able to: Define Protective Capacities; Discuss the differences between strengths and Protective Capacities; Describe the categories and levels of Protective Capacities Consider ways in which Safety Threats operate; and Explain the connection between Protective Capacities and Family Service Plans.

Protective Capacities Defined Specific and explicit strengths that manage and control Safety Threats.

Categories of Protective Capacities Behavioral - How people act Cognitive - How people think and perceive the world Emotional - How people feel

Levels of Protective Capacities Enhanced - the caregiver has the capacity and is actively using that capacity to protect their child(ren). Diminished – the caregiver has the capacity but is not using it, due to life circumstances or other reasons, to protect their child(ren). Absent – the caregiver does not have the capacity at all.

How is the Safety Threat in Operation? Is the Safety Threat occurring due to a lack of knowledge? Does the caregiver have the knowledge, but the threat is occurring because they are not using the knowledge? Is the threat occurring due to a gap/deficit in the emotional alignment or attachment to the child(ren)?

Key Questions What is going on now? What must change? What must eventually exist?
