MEDIA LITERACY IMPLICIT AND EXPLICIT MESSAGES 1

Be sure to write your name & class period at the top! Let’s Get Started! Get out a sheet of notebook paper and label it “Implicit & Explicit Messages”. You will be answering 10 questions on this sheet, but you may use the back to take notes if you want! Be sure to write your name & class period at the top! 1/24/10

Give it a try! What is the cereal box advertising? What are some other messages you get from looking at this? 1/24/10 3

IMPLICIT AND EXPLICIT MESSAGES We see implicit and explicit messages on a daily basis in the media we watch, listen to, and read. 4

EXPLICIT MESSAGES Explicit messages are obvious, clear, specific, and detailed. Explicit messages leave little room for interpretation. 5

IMPLICIT MESSAGES Implicit messages are hidden messages. Implicit messages are not so obvious, they are inferred. This means the media uses visuals, settings, body language, colors, etc. to communicate meaning rather than just saying what they mean. 6

IMPLICIT AND EXPLICIT MESSAGES Explicit messages are OPENLY STATED INFORMATION. Implicit messages can be figured out, using all of the sight, sounds, etc. of the message.

IMPLICIT & EXPLICIT MESSAGES Implicit and explicit messages are used in commercials, songs, newspapers, television shows, web sites, brochures, magazines, product labels/packaging, political cartoons, etc. 8

IMPLICIT & EXPLICIT MESSAGES Implicit and explicit messages are techniques used in various forms of media to influence and inform the audience. 9

IMPLICIT & EXPLICIT MESSAGES Write your answers on your sheet of notebook paper. 3. What are the explicit messages in the Nike ad? Remember explicit messages are obvious messages. 10

IMPLICIT & EXPLICIT MESSAGES 4. What are the implicit messages in the Nike ad? Remember implicit messages are hidden messages. 11

IMPLICIT & EXPLICIT MESSAGES Different people can find different messages in the text. Someone that grew up in a different part of the world, with a different culture, will find different meanings in the text. Someone who lives on the very same street as you, might still find different meanings in the text. 12

IMPLICIT & EXPLICIT MESSAGES We have the ability to see these messages (both explicit and implicit). We also have the power to agree or disagree them. 13

TRY THESE ! On your notebook paper, write down your answers to the questions on the following slides.

5. What are the explicit messages of this Kellogg’s ad? 6. What are the implicit messages of this Kellogg’s ad? Remember implicit messages are hidden messages.

7. What are the explicit messages of this Wii Fit ad? 8. What are the implicit messages of this Wii Fit ad?

REVIEW Explicit messages are obvious & stated outright. Implicit messages are inferred or “hidden” messages. Remember that every piece of media has explicit and implicit meanings. The creator may or may not intend to say certain messages, but they are there. The meanings might be different for each individual, depending on their previous life experiences. 17

Last Questions! 9. What is the definition (in your own words) of an explicit message? 10. What is the definition (in your own words) of an implicit message? 1/24/10
