#GetUpAndGo Implementation of an Inpatient ‘Get Up and Go’ Reablement Programme- The Therapist’s Role. Ashleigh Goulding and Natalie Kitchener The Ipswich Hospital has recognised the importance of promoting reablement on all wards within our hospital. Recognition is just the start, now we all need to work together to implement a change in our working practices. We believe that through shared training goals we can start to enable ourselves as a team to make that change. Psychological effects including; Depression, anxiety, decreased motivation, decrease in independence and motivation Risk of developing respiratory problems May lead to reduced appetite causing malnutrition and constipation Reduced muscle strength and stamina leading to functional disability Higher risk of developing cardiac and circulatory problems Increased likelihood of skin breakdown Impact of reablement Decreases length of stay in hospital and assists with patient flow Potentially reduces need for extra care or new placements in the community Increases mood and confidence, reduces anxiety and increases self-esteem Increases appetite and energy levels Maintaining mobility and decreased falls Empowering patients to achieve personal goals Impact of bedrest Outcomes Our outcome measures address deconditioning, length of stay (LOS) and patient satisfaction. Since starting the 'Get Up and Go' programme, one wards’ LOS has reduced from 9.1 days to 7 in 4 months. We therefore save time for us and our patients. Future directions Train all ward staff Prompt cards Promote trial huddles Reablement champions Social dining Bay exercises The Suffolk Show and other events On tour mannequin to improve public recognition My reablement pledge is…. To encourage patients to care for themselves ready for going home. My reablement pledge is…. To share the importance of reablement across the hospital and community services. My reablement pledge is…. To challenge the ‘always have done it this way’ by leading, motivating and role modelling to staff that small changes can make a huge impact on patient recovery and their patient journey. My reablement pledge is…. To always inspire to reable patients by demonstrating reablement each day.
