Sharpening Tools
Terms to Know: Bench Stone-A sharpening stone designed to rest on the bench Hans Stone- A sharpening stone designed to be held in the hand when in use. Inclined plane- A surface that is at an angle to another surface.
Convex- An inclined plane that curves out to increase strength. Concave- A shallow inclined plane that curves in to increase sharpness and ease of use. Hollow ground- Blades that are sharpened so that their tips are wider than their base.
Tool steel- Steel with a specific carbon content that allows the tool to be annealed and tempered. Anneal-The heating and cooling of steel slowly so as to make it soft and malleable.
Temper- To heat the steel and then cool it more quickly so as to control the degree of hardness. Draw the Temper-The excessive heating of tempered steel that renders it soft and useless until it is tempered again. High speed drill-A twist drill made and tempered specially to drill steel.
