Section 1.4 Integers and Absolute Value Algebra Concepts Section 1.4 Integers and Absolute Value

Warmup Write an algebraic expression for each description. #1 three less than m #2 8 divided by a number #3 a number plus 7

What is a number line? It is an orderly way to arrange numbers in the correct order. Smaller numbers are on the left and larger numbers are on the right.

To compare two numbers: Find them on the number line The number farther to the right is the larger one. Be able to use these symbols >𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 ≥𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑟 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑜 < 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 ≤𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑟 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑜

Types of numbers Natural numbers- 1,2,3,4… Whole numbers-natural numbers plus zero (the hole) 0,1,2,3,4… Opposite numbers- numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line

Integers- whole numbers and their opposites Zero is the divider between the positive numbers to the right and the negative numbers to the left.

When are negative numbers used in real life?

What does absolute value of a number mean? The number’s distance from zero on a number line The symbol for absolute value is 𝑥

When you take the absolute of a number, remove the absolute value signs. (get out of jail) When simplifying an expression, treat absolute value signs like parentheses.

Simplify each expression. #1 −4 #2 7− −4 #3 − −8 #4 −3 + 3

#1 −4 4 #2 7− −4 7−4 P 3 AS #3 − −8 −8 P

#4 −3 + 3 3+3 P 6 AS
