Three Consuls At the end of the “Reign of Terror” The Directory was dissolved. In its place a group of three consuls would rule France. Napoleon was one of the consuls.

Napoleon was the leader of the French army AFTER the Revolution In 1796 the Directory put Napoleon in charge of the French troops who successfully defeated the Austrians. The Coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte 1799 stages a Coup d’ etat and overthrows the corrupt French government. In 1800 a plebiscite was held approving the new constitution and giving Napoleon all the power Ruled as a Dictator and Emperor for 15 years

Signed a concordat with Pope Pius VII: new relationship with the church and state. French government would appoint bishops and bishops would appoint priests. Napoleonic Code: limited liberty Took away women’s right to sell property Banned freedom of speech and the press Restored slavery in the French colonies in the Caribbean. Napoleon crowns himself Emperor in 1804.
Napoleon's Conquest Sold the Louisiana Territory to the USA for $15 million dollars Used the money to go to war with other European countries Defeated at The Battle of Trafalgar by Admiral Nelson of Britain and lost his whole fleet in 1805 By 1812 he controlled all of continental Europe
