Presentation transcript:

What are the affects of segregation? What is segregation? What are the affects of segregation?

After the Civil war… Southern states passed racial segregation laws to separate white and black people in public and private facilities. These laws came to be known as Jim Crow Laws; named after a popular old song that ended in the words “jump, Jim Crow”. Racial segregation was put into effect in schools, hospitals, parks, and transportation systems in the south.

Plessy v. Ferguson Eventually a legal case reached the U.S. Supreme Court to test the constitutionality of segregation. In 1896, in Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court ruled that the separation of races in public accommodations was legal and didn’t violate the 14th Amendment. The decision established the doctrine of “separate but equal”, which allowed states to maintain segregated facilities for blacks and whites as long as they provided equal service. This Supreme Court decision permitted legalized racial segregation for almost 60 years in the United States. Can separate be equal? Now, complete your data chart comparing black and white education in Mississippi.

Answer in complete sentences after completing your chart on page 88 What did you learn about education in Mississippi? Why would Mississippi spend less on the education of blacks than whites? Was the state of Mississippi upholding the Plessy v. Ferguson case? What are the short term effects of underfunding the education? What are the long-term effects of underfunding education? Other than funding, can you think of any other factors that may have influenced African American’s access to quality education? What Supreme Court case overturns Plessy v. Ferguson?
