Brown Network and Telecomm Topics Network upgrade to support 10 Gig in the core and some distribution points Firewall Analysis VOIP project / UC / In Building Cellular Leasing options for capitol purchases Wireless status and 802.11n approach Campus construction projects and underground Life safety on the network Data Center

4/24/2019 Upgrade To Support 10 Gig Increasing bandwidth demand from research departments Future proof the current network design Planned support of future Voice, Video and data Current gear is 5 years old Funded through a 10 year renewal budget Reviewing leasing options for all capitol purchases Pressure cables Future services & features: Unified Messaging, Unified Communications (mobility, presence, video) 4/24/2019 Brown University CIS

Firewall Analysis Departments currently Firewalled from the core 4/24/2019 Firewall Analysis Departments currently Firewalled from the core 10 Gig upgrade increases bandwidth requirements for Firewall throughput Departments increasingly requesting FW services New Security team will provide a new list of services Cisco: numerous gateways to interface to SL-100 Avaya: Not sure of future R&D investment, and stories of support issues. Pingtel: Small costly and additional FTE requirement. Asterisk: good solution but not for Brown at this time, time required to implement, hire and train Cedar Point U-Mass pilot Shoretel: nice system but too small best for under 1000 users Outsourcing: Verizon quote for 8700 IP Centrex lines 74K/mo Nortel CS 1000 interfacing to SL-100 via T-1 Gateways Nortel CS2100 best solution for Brown\, takes advantage of existing infrastructure and directly interfaces to SL-100 without T-1 gateways. 4/24/2019 Brown University CIS

Wireless Status and 802.11n Approach 4/24/2019 Wireless Status and 802.11n Approach Currently 930 Aruba AP65’s and 17 Outdoor AP70’s Deployed 5 Aruba Controllers 550 AP65 in Residential locations Budget all but exhausted Possible purchase of 802.11n AP’s to replace the AP65 in residence halls No plans to discontinue wired services in the residence halls Drivers: 40+ year old cable plant with air pressure to keep conductors dry 19 year old PBX & battery plant unsupported in 2011 3 DLM units currently not supported Currently have to offer TDM solutions to new construction This upgrade is needed to provide the infrastructure to give us the ability to deploy VoIP services where it makes since, such as new off campus or remodeled locations, where existing cable plant is at capacity or experiencing problems and to replace end of life TDM components as needed. Octel system installed in mid 90’s, and is end of life June 2011. A new system will provide us with Unified Messaging. This will provide high visibility for CIS. Current battery plant installed late 80’s, new systems requires less footprint and use sealed gel cell batteries. 4/24/2019 Brown University CIS

Campus Construction Projects Mind Brain Building 2009 Creative Arts Building 2009 New Fitness Center 2009 Underground Utility Projects underway Call Pilot: interfaces to SL-100 not CS2100 UM 2000 no student shared bail boxes, too large Exchange: Will Brown’s Systems group support? AVST same as CallPilot
