Dr Timothy Jung ( Manchester Metropolitan University ) Summary: Augmented and Virtual Reality projects in the context of cultural heritage in the UK. In this talk, I will introduce a number of AR and VR projects, conducted by Augmented and Virtual Reality Hub, including recent Manchester Beacons Project as part of celebration of European City of Science (ECOS) 2016. With regard to Manchester Beacons Project, the key stakeholders include Marketing Manchester, Salford University, and Manchester Metropolitan University launched the Manchester Beacons Project, in collaboration with the US software innovator Spark Compass. The project involved the development of a mobile application for the Manchester Science Cultural Heritage tour using augmented reality, virtual reality and beacons technologies in order to bring Manchester's science history to life. The project aimed to provide visitors with a mixed reality smart tourism experience that infused an alternative visitor experience, inspiring visitors to see places differently. It also provided enhanced augmented reality retail experience using beacons technology. I will present the Manchester Beacons project and discuss a stakeholder approach employed for the collaborative smart city/smart tourism project. In addition, I will discuss the significance of the projects, its long-term impacts and the future plan for development.
