Figure 1 In the adult vertebrate CNS very few, if any, axons regenerate past a lesion site. (A) In this sagittal view of an injured mouse spinal cord, where rostral is left and dorsal is top, neurons that project from the brain to the spinal cord have been labeled with a dye (black) that allows them to be visualized. Eight weeks after injury, axons remain stalled out near the site of transection (red arrow). (B) A higher magnification image shows characteristic retraction bulbs (arrowheads) at the tips of these axons.
