The Asch Conformity Experiment Matthew Hales and Sidney Coleman

Psychologists: - Solomon Asch: pioneer in social psychology. Born September 14th, 1907 in Warsaw, Poland and died February 20th, 1996 in Haverford, Pennsylvania.

Purpose of the experiment All but one of 8 men were actors and Asch wanted to see how the one non actor would react the the actors behavior without knowing the others were acting.

Summary of the experiment The Experiment Asch brought in 8 male subjects (7 of which were actors) to participate in a study to see if the one non actor would react and respond to the actors behaviors without knowing the other men were clearly just acting.

Results of the Experiment Asch measured the amount of times the majority was the same. About 1/3 of the participants who were placed in the situation went along with the incorrect majority Over 12 trials 75% of participants conformed at least once and 25% never conformed.

Problems with the Experiment. During the 1950's America was very conservative and often ostracized those who didn't share the same ideas They also weren't consistent with what kind of students they were using in this.

Would I have participated in this? Matt: I already know I would catch on to the behaviors of the others so yeah I would participate Sidney: I would probably participate in this just because I do like to see effects of social studies.
