Subtle- difficult to sense or perceive Indifferent- having no particular opinion

Questions about story Why did the Bitterings settle on Mars? Why did the rockets from Earth stop coming to Mars? What is Harry Bittering afraid of?

Please answer the following in complete sentences. 1.What details tell you that the Bitterings have become more Martian than human? 2.What do you think happened to the original inhabitants of Mars? 3. What do you think will happen to the Bitterings? 4. Predict what will happen to the Lieutenant. 5.What does this story say about the way human beings handle change in their lives? Give 3 specific examples from the story.

Responses to Questions 1. Any details about their appearance and the way they talk about humans. 2.They are still there but no longer visible. 3. The Bitterings will, in time, become one with the landscape and atmosphere. 4. The Lieutenant won’t be able to resist the changes either. 5. Humans react differently to change. Some like Harry, may resist change and others, for example his wife and children adapt more easily.

Do Now: Please get a textbook and open to page 479. Then take out a sheet of loose-leaf paper.

Writing Response “Such odd, such ridiculous houses the Earth people built.” “Such ugly people. I’m glad they’ve gone.” What characters in the story say this, and what do they mean by this?? Explain. Found on the bottom of page 489

Sample Response Mr. Bittering is the one who said those words and his wife Cora. The reason why he said that was because he had forgotten who he was and turned into a Martian. He didn’t realize that he used to be a human and was now following the Martian ways.

Create Circular Plot Diagram List the events from the beginning of the story to the end. Notice how the story ends very similar to where it began and the events seem to hint at repeating again.

Circular Plot Structure Settlement of the town Changes in earthly life forms Destruction of rockets Harry’s attempt to build one Bitterings’ move to the hills Transformation into Martians Lieutenant drawn into Martian landscape New colonists will become Martians Rename the landmarks Set up towns
