Causes of Death data collection 2011, 1st data collection following regulation no. 328/2011 Anke Weber, Marie Clerc

Overview Data collection – reference year 2011 Validation Dissemination tables Future satellite tables Next round: 2012 data EDIT validation tool for MS Conclusions

Regulation 328/2011 implementing regulation on causes of death adopted April 2011 2011 data collection on COD was first under regulation New variables have been collected, namely: Number of stillbirths; Country/region of occurrence; Country/region of residence; Age of mother (on a voluntary basis for stillbirths and neonatal deaths); Parity (on a voluntary basis for stillbirths and neonatal deaths); More detailed age breakdown (disaggregation of age below 7 days and more detailed breakdowns for old age groups 85-89, 90-94, 95-99, 100-104 and 105+)

Data transmission 33 countries sent data on COD for 2011: 28 EU MS + NO, LI, CH, RS and TR 23 countries sent data before the deadline (31/12/2013) For most countries several transmissions needed before complying with format requirements (….some countries up to 6 transmissions) Slightly more micro data than aggregate data Reminder: use eDamis for data submissions 13 Countries reported aggregated data for the general mortality data file and 15 for stillbirths and neonatal mortality data. Hence, 19 Countries reported micro data for the general mortality data file and 17 for stillbirths and neonatal mortality data

Validation Problems encountered: Wrong format (for example data in separate excel documents) ICD codes issues (for example inconsistencies with age or sex, unknown code, wrong format for example for 3 digits code) Duplicate (i.e. duplicated row for aggregated data or duplicated ID for micro data) Inconsistencies between GEN and SBN files Some countries did not report deaths for non- residents in the first data transmission.

Dissemination - Eurobase Absolute numbers, per 100000 inhabitants and standardized death rates 1. Deaths of residents in- or outside their home country 2. Deaths occurring in the country (residents or non-residents) Dissemination - Eurobase Data from all 28 MS needed! Data on Stillbirths and Day0, Day1-6, Day7-27 by age of mother – no parity due to confidentiality Infant mortality by occurrence or residence 19 MS sent data by age of mother / 22 MS sent data by stillbirth group 1994-2010 data

New tables for specific public health areas Publication 1Q 2015: Satellite tables New tables for specific public health areas Publication 1Q 2015: Amenable and preventable deaths of residents Infant deaths of residents by cause Deaths related to transport accidents occurring in the country Deaths of residents related to dementias including Alzheimer Deaths related to infectious diseases

2012 data Received already 2012 data from: AT, NO, FI, LT, LU, MT, PT, DE, ES, CH, LI, BG, HU, EE, NL, HR, SI, PL  Thank you! Deadline for 2012 data provision is 31. December 2014 Please ensure reporting of deaths for residents and non-residents (by country of residence) HR: 11 Dec 2014

Future validation A new validation tool - EDIT - was implemented and extensively tested over summer 2014 2011 validation carried out with EDIT EDIT will be made available to Member States in the coming weeks: Eurostat will provide a detailed description of the tool, information of training sessions and support in due time. For the future: MS are invited to use this tool before transmitting data files to Eurostat Planned: presentation of EDIT to TG COD in March 2015

Conclusion The WG PH is invited to take note of the results from the 2011 data collection to send 2012 data via Edamis until 31.12.2014 to take note of Eurostat's plans for a common validation tool

Thank you for your attention!
