LAAMS PRESENTS Sit to Eat and Trash Your Trash

or… How to Properly Eat in the Lunch Area

Problem: Misuse of the eating area

Problem: Students are… … leaving unwanted food on their tables and on the ground …leaving trash behind at their tables …trying to stuff their trash into overflowing trash cans

Result: - Food and trash left on the tables - Food and trash left on the ground -People just stop caring about what our environment looks like

This is no accident.

We can do better than this.

Check out your schools trash statistics!

LAAMS Trash Statistic NUTRITION -On average 40% of tables are left with trash on top and or underneath -Min # of tables with trash– 16 -Max # of tables with trash – 42

LUNCH -On average 40% of tables are left with trash on top or underneath (Same as Nutrition) -Min # of tables with Trash – 23 (Greater) -Max # of tables with trash – 64 (Greater) LAAMS Trash Statistic continued

So What? These factors cause some pretty BIG concerns for all of us here at LA Academy.

Concern# 1 Its unsanitary. Unwanted food that is dumped on the table such as meat, chicken bones, fruit peels or trash that is left on the table, such as wrappers, utensils, trays, and plastic forks are great places for bacteria and viruses to hang out and multiply.

Concern#1 continued: When the next person arrives at the table, those same bacteria and viruses are ready to find a new home: Your hands Your tray Your mouth.

Concern# 2: An unclean eating area is a major attraction for pests.

Concern # 2 continued: When you leave your unwanted food and trash on the tables, its like you are ringing the dinner bell for all kinds of pests. The problem is that birds, rats, and roaches walk on the tables with feet that have walked everywhere.

Concern # 2 continued: They also go to the bathroom any time they like. They leave behind unsavory things like urine and feces – which dont belong in a cafeteria.

Concern # 3 Its just GROSS!

In Pursuit of Excellence. pursuit = to chase in order to attain excellence = highest quality; the very best This is our school motto.

Champions 1.Those who battle for what is right and honorable 2.Those who win and show marked superiority

Put them together: This is the home of the champions – those who do what is right and honorable We pursue excellence here – we always strive for the highest quality

Champions who strive for the highest quality will always find solutions.

Solution #1 Sit to eat.

Sit to Eat. Its safer. It solves the problem of people who are sitting at the table being left with everyone elses trash. Its just good manners.

Solution # 2 Trash your trash!

Trash Your Trash. Sometimes when people see someone doing something, they do the same thing too without really thinking about it. (Dont believe it? Try yawning!) When you leave your trash behind, other people might do the same thing. So…

Trash Your Trash.

Trash Your Trash. When one of your friends walks away and leaves her or his trash behind…

Trash Your Trash. Remind that person:

Trash Your Trash.

If you have food you dont want, dont just put it on the table:

Trash Your Trash. Put it in one of the areas of your tray

Trash Your Trash. When you see a trash can that is full, dont keep trying to stack trash on top of it.

Find an empty trashcan and Trash Your Trash.

You might be thinking… This is the custodians job! Thats what theyre hired to do.

Wrong! The custodial staff works very hard – to keep the campus maintained. They were NOT hired to do the things we can do ourselves. Theres another reason…

Math Time! On a normal day here at LAAMS, there are 2 custodians at the lunch area. It takes approximately 3 minutes to clean a table. There are 87 tables in the picnic area. There are only 116 minutes between Nutrition and Lunch.

Say that again? 3 minutes per table times 87 tables = 261 minutes to clean the cafeteria. But there are only 116 minutes between Nutrition and Lunch. And that is not enough time to have a clean cafeteria if students have left trash and food everywhere.

oh… The longer they have to spend cleaning the cafeteria, means the less time they have for making sure there are enough bathroom supplies and that we have a smoothly running campus.

So remember: When you are eating in the lunch area Sit to Eat. Trash Your Trash.

We are the home of the champions!
