The bomb was delivered by the USS Indianapolis to the island of Tinian on July 26, 1945.
On July 30,1945, the Indianapolis was hit by two torpedoes out of six, fired by the I-58, a Japanese submarine.
Of the one thousand, one hundred and ninety-six aboard, about 900 made it into the water in twelve minutes. Shark attacks began with sunrise of the first day and continued almost five days later.
Captain McVay survived the explosion Captain McVay survived the explosion. When help came, only about one fourth of the crew was rescued.
Rubber rafts and supplies helped the rescue.
