A C T S Go Tell the Good     News! Lesson 19  Acts 17:10-34

Paul’s 2nd Missionary Journey Paul & Silas in Berea (Acts 17:10-15) Paul and Silas immediately enter the synagogue to evangelize (17:10) Their hearers in Berea were more “fair minded” than the Thessalonians in that… (17:11-12) “They received the word with all readiness” They “examined the Scriptures daily” Many believed! Jews from Thessalonica came to Berea and stirred up the crowds (17:13, cf. 14:19) This prompted the brethren to send Paul to Athens, but Silas and Timothy remained behind (17:14)

Paul’s 2nd Missionary Journey Movements of the Evangelists Luke stays at Philippi Someone brings aid to Paul from Philippi in Thessalonica (possibly Timothy, Phil. 4:15-16) Brethren take Paul to Athens, but Silas and Timothy remain in Berea (17:14) Paul sends word back to Silas and Timothy for them to come to him with all speed (17:15) Once Timothy arrives, Paul sends him back to Thessalonica to check on the brethren (1 Thessalonians 3:1-2) Timothy and Silas join Paul later in Corinth (1 Thessalonians 1:1; 3:6; Acts 18:5)

Paul’s 2nd Missionary Journey Paul in Athens (Acts 17:16-34) While Paul waited in Athens, “his spirit was provoked” by the rampant idolatry he witnessed; he was moved to preach Jesus not only in the Synagogue, but also in the marketplace (or agora) (17:16-17) Stoic and Epicurean philosophers who were interested in what Paul was saying, took him to the Areopagus to give him a full hearing (17:18-21)

Mars Hill or Areopagus near the Agora 370 feet high seat of the council

Paul’s 2nd Missionary Journey Paul in Athens (Acts 17:16-34) Paul made the following points in his speech: The Athenians were very religious (17:22) There was one God they did not know. (17:23) This one true God… (17:24-28) Does not dwell in temples made with hands because He is Lord of heaven and earth. Does not need anything from men, since He is the source of life, breath and all things. Has put man on earth to seek Him. Was referenced as man’s creator by Greek poets! Since we are His offspring we should realize that God cannot be fashioned by men’s hands (17:28-29)

Paul’s 2nd Missionary Journey Paul in Athens (Acts 17:16-34) God now expects all men to repent of such ignorance because He will judge the world (17:30-31) God ordained Jesus to be the Judge and certified His choice by raising Him from the dead. The reaction to the idea of the resurrection was marked largely by mockery or uncertainty. A few believed (17:32-34)
