THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a big country consisting of 4 parts. Their names are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The capital of England is London, the capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, the capital of Wales is Cardiff and the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

The United Kingdom is situated (расположено) on islands (островах) and there are seas on all sides of it. Great Britain is separated (отделена от) from the continent by the North Sea (Северное море) and English Channel (проливом Ла-Манш). The population of the country is about 58 million people.  The national language is English.

There are many mountains in the north of England and in Scotland,  but they are not very high. The highest mountain  in Great Britain is Ben Nevis.

Thanks to the Gulf Stream (Гольфстрим) the climate of Great Britain is mild (умеренный, мягкий).   The nature in Great Britain is very beautiful: long rivers and deep lakes,  high mountains and lovely farmlands.  The weather is often foggy (туманная) and rainy (дождливая).  Summer is not very hot and winter is not very cold.

London, the capital of Great Britain, has around 10 million inhabitants. It is an old city. London is situated on the Thames River.  It was founded in the 11th century by the Romans (римлянами).  London is well-known for its red double-deckers (2-этажные автобусы) and black taxis or black cabs.

British people enjoy going out to a pub for a drink  and eating in restaurants. During the weekend people enjoy having a typical  English breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans,  toasted bread, black pudding with orange juice and English tea.

The British are big sport  fans of football and rugby.

When we speak about Great Britain we remember Big Ben, The Tower of London,  Westminster Abbey, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, London Eye and others.  I would like to visit this  country very much.
