PE Global Citizenship unit gender inequality in sport

Gender Inequalities What does it mean? What is the situation? How does it feel? What can we do about it?

Gender inequality refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences.

Task 1 Get into groups 3 – single sex Make up an exercise session which lasts 5 minutes It must have at least 5 different exercises Maximum of 40 seconds rest Minimum of 10 seconds rest

Task Reflection Was the task: Fair? Unfair?

Gender Stereotypes Task 1 – Brainstorm different stereotypes between Girls and Boys in day to day life. Task 2 – Brainstorm different stereotypes between Girls and Boys in Sport. Task 3 – Weights session led by Mr Laverty

Reflection How did the weights session make the: -Girls feel? -Boys feel? How could this session be made more inclusive? What issues can arise from inequality?

Homework Task Create a poster presentation which gives information and examples of inequalities within sport. These posters will be displayed in the PE department so make them as interesting and informative as possible! Homework is due in 2 weeks time.

Physiological Differences There are some obvious physiological differences between fully grown Men and Women. Does this mean one Gender should be more valued in sport than the other? Task 1: Vote – Fair or Unfair?

Regardless of Gender both Male and Female athletes will put in the same amount of time, effort, commitment, and determination into the same Sport. Why then, do they get different rewards? Task 2: Insanity Cardio Workout

All those who voted Unfair receive a Merit!!!!! How do you feel if you voted “Fair”? You’ve done the same task but one group is getting rewarded while the other gets nothing… Should I award a Merit to the whole class for working hard?

Its important for people to learn how to work together, over come differences and celebrate what you can achieve together. We are stronger together. We can achieve more together. Task 2: Break the world record for a Half Marathon…

5 in a group 25m relay 832 lengths in total Each group has to reach a total of 170 lengths (roughly 34 each) World record 58mins 23 sec held by Zersenay Tadese We only have 25minutes…

The Result! (Hopefully) A class of 27 Girls and Boys broke the Half Marathon World Record! This demonstrates the power of working together! Unfortunately there are people in the world who think they are better than others depending on their Gender, Race, Sexual Orientation or Religion. People with this mind-set will find it difficult to work with other people who are different from themselves which in turn, will limit their ability to achieve.

Group Competition 5 people in a group Each person comes up with at least 2 different “aerobic” moves. Put the moves together to make a routine to music Share the routine with the rest of the class

Before we start… This will be a team activity so it’s important to know what makes effective team work…? Lesson 1 – Single sex groups Lesson 2 – Mixed gender groups Lesson 3 – Share and grade group routines

Lesson 3 - Reflection For the single sex groups how did you find: Making the routine Were people easy to work with? Were there any issues? Was your group productive? Leading the routine Did you do it to the best of your ability? Were you embarrassed for any reason?

Pyramid Work Out Whole class works together at the same time Work at your own pace Encourage others around you to try their best I can provide the exercises, I can tell you how much to do, I can give you all of the information and knowledge on how to improve your health and fitness but YOU are the only ones who can change the way you act. YOU are the only ones who can make a difference.

I can show you how gender inequality is a huge problem in todays society. I can tell you how to act and stand-up for equality between Men and Women but YOU are the only ones in control of your behaviour and the way you treat one another. Are YOU the type of person who treats others with respect? Will YOU be the person who stands up for victims in society? What type of person do YOU want to be?

Gender neutrality What does this mean? Is this how we are in this school/PE department?

Gender equity Equity is when people are treated with their differences taken into account – eg someone has a wheelchair
