Traditional” AP Lab 5 Cellular Respiration

Hypothesis Temperature effects how an organism carries out cellular respiration. The rate of cellular respiration will change according to the temperature. The warm temperature peas will show a higher rate of cellular respiration than the peas in cold temperature. The warmer peas will use more oxygen. Thus, there will be a greater change volume of water in the pipette of the warm peas respirometer over a given time than the cold peas respirometer. When you read this, you should be able to find the variable which is tested and a statement of what is believed to happen (should relate to what you are trying to find out) and a description of what is being measured that represents what you are studying (like the water level in pipette is chaning)

The Respirometers Experiment Control

Equilibrating the Respirometers Can you read the Pipette?

Experimental Design Beads Alone Respirometer – Control: Should see no changes. Beads do not respire. *Ensures that the variable of the experiment is true cause of the change Germinating Peas Respirometer- Experimental setup – One that contains the variable – In this lab the variable is temperature: Expose the beads alone and the germinating peas to two different temperatures, 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. Design also compares the metabolic status of peas: Germinating versus Dry At 20 degrees C, is there a different in Cellular Respiration Rate

Use the table to determine the actual amount of oxygen consumed by the peas. The amount of oxygen consumed is a visual representation of cellular respiration. Beads alone will be used to adjust the volume Measurments taken for the germinating peas Let’s look at an example…

What you should know… How to write a hypothesis The purpose of this investigation How to identify the independent and dependent variable on a data table and a graph Write the formula for rate without using the y/ x Calculate rate Design a new experiment using AP Lab 5 protocol
