Vascularized Composite Allograft (VCA) Transplantation Committee Spring 2016 Update

Board-Approved Projects Summary Implementation Date VCA Recipient Data Collection Establishes first VCA transplant recipient data registry in the U.S. Second quarter 2016 (projected) Membership Requirements for VCA Transplant Programs Establishes training and experience requirements for the primary transplant physician and surgeon at VCA programs Third quarter 2016 (projected) VCA Recipient Data Collection establishes the first VCA-recipient data registry in the U.S. Mandatory data submission for VCA recipients was effective on September 1, 2015 using fillable PDFs. Electronic data collection will be implemented in the second quarter of 2016. Data collection on VCA transplants performed prior to September 1, 2015 will be optional. UNOS staff will contact the transplant hospitals where these transplants were performed to facilitate data submission. Integration of data collection into the UNetSM system is expected to be implemented in the second quarter of 2016. Membership Requirements for VCA transplant programs establishes more robust training and experience requirements for key personnel at VCA transplant programs. These applications will be reviewed by the MPSC, then handed off to the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors for consideration. The new membership requirements will be implemented in the third quarter of 2016.

Ongoing Projects Project Summary Completion Date Survey to Identify Barriers to VCA Authorization and Recovery Survey 58 OPOs about actual or perceived barriers to deceased VCA donation April 2016 (projected) The VCA Committee is currently working on a survey to assess barriers to VCA authorization and recovery. The survey will be sent to all OPOs in the U.S. in February 2016. The VCA Committee will review the result of this survey during their April 2016 in-person meeting. Future projects will likely be based on the results of this survey (educational initiatives, data collection, best practices, etc…).
