Guided Practice with Fact and Opinion Identify the opinions and the facts in the passage below. Censorship in School It is unfortunate that when controversial topics make headlines in high school newspapers, local boards and high-school principals often feel compelled to ban them. Can certain topics be banned? In 1988, a 5-3 ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court gave school administrators the ability to suppress controversial stories. Such restraints are not rare; recently, the Student Press Law Center in Washington received more than 500 reports of censorship battles from student editors around the country. Student groups should ban together to fight censorship of any kind in school newspapers.
