TRUE REST Psalms 4:1-8 08.29.2018

2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves. (Ps 127:2)

1 Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God 1 Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. 2 How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods? 3 Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him. (Ps 4:1-3)

4 Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. 5 Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the Lord. 6 Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us. (Ps 4:4-6)

7 Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound. 8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Ps 4:7-8)

FEEL REVERENT AWE: “Tremble and do not sin.” Remember there is a God who made you. He is everywhere at all times. He is our judge. He is Almighty.

He is infinitely good. 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? (Ro 2:4)

There is a future state. 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (He 9:27)

PRACTICE THOUGHTFUL SELF-EXAMINATION: 4 when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. (Ps 4:4) Think about yourself. Think of the state of your heart.

Think by yourself. Think for yourself. Think until you become still.

MAKE A RIGHT APPROACH TO GOD: 5 Offer the sacrifices of the righteous (Ps 4:5) 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. (James 5:16)

EXERCISE FAITH: 5 …trust in the Lord. (Ps 4:5)

THE GLORIOUS RESULTS 8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Ps 4:8)
