Question 8

Question 8 Each day, Maria walks from home to school and then from school to home. The graphs that follow show the distance that Maria is from home at different times during the walk. Match the graphs to the descriptions of Maria’s walk shown to the right of the graphs. There shouldn’t be a need for calculators on this one since the students are not really using any math to solve it. In order for the students to get full credit, they need to be able to match all of the graphs correctly. For the answers, I have each graph on a different slide and an explanation of why it’s the answer that is given.

Question 8 Cont D: Maria walks from school to home at a constant rate. For this problem, we can see that Maria starts far away from home and is walking back towards home. We know this because the higher she is on the y-axis (the vertical axis) the further she is from home, according to our label. We are also looking for something where she is going straight home with no stopping. The letter that corresponds to this is D: Maria walks from school to home at a constant rate. Even though it doesn’t state that she is at school, you have to make a guess as to where she is.

Question 8 Cont B: Maria walks from home to school at a constant rate For this problem, we know that Maria is starting at home. We are looking for a time that she is at home, because of that. We know she is at home because her distance from home is increasing as the time is increasing. She is walking at a constant rate and not stopping; that is why B matches for this question.

Question 8 Cont C: Maria starts to walk from home to school. She stops to see whether she has her homework. She realizes she forgot her homework and runs back to get it For this problem, Maria starts at home, as the graph shows. She walks for a distance and then stops to look for her homework. At this point, it is the straight, horizontal line. It shows that she is not moving but time keeps increasing. The story next shows that Maria forgot her work and runs back home to get it. The line going home is steeper than the original line because she runs at the end and walked at the beginning.

Question 8 Cont A: Maria walks from school to her friend’s house. She visits her friend for a while. Then she walks the rest of the way home. For this one, Maria is starting away from home (at school) and heading home. It shows that she is walking for a while, pausing for a while, and then walking some more. The story that fits with this is that Maria walks from school to her friends house. She stays at her friends house, and then goes home. You know this is right because she starts going towards home, pauses and continues towards home.
