What? A report Housing practices Adequate housing WHAT - A REPORT WITH EXAMPLES OF HOUSING PRACTICES Housing practices that have improved adequate housing and promoted the achievement of durable solutions for internally displaced people worldwide and appear to be replicable elsewhere. Particular attention is being paid to finding practices targeting groups at risk in relation to land and housing (such as women, children, indigenous…) Housing practice: policy, legislation, strategy, project or programme, campaign, planning or coordination procedure Return, local integration or settlement elsewhere Conflict and/or natural disaster displacement Local, national, international organisations, including IDPs No “good,” “best” or other label Strengths, limitations and lessons learned, positive impacts, undesirable shortcomings or consequences

Why? Obstacle to durable solutions No such study Demand for this information WHY – TO HELP IDPS PROGRESS TOWARDS DURABLE SOLUTIONS THROUGH ADEQUATE HOUSING RATIONALE 1. Lack of enjoyment of housing rights is a common obstacle to durable solutions 2. A study on housing practices that support durable solutions for IDPs is absent 3. There is a demand for information on this topic

Progress to date Concept note shared Short list of examples (~20) Burundi, Georgia, Sri Lanka, Somalia Final publication 2013 The concept note was shared with the following organisations in order to seek input and potential cooperation on the report and/or advocacy: -UN HABITAT -UNDP -UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing -UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons -Global Protection Cluster -HLP Working Group of the Global Protection Cluster -Child Protection Working Group -GenCap -COHRE -InterAction A short list of possible housing practices to be included in the report was compiled through desk research and the above consultations. It includes practices from each of the following regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Middle East for conflict and natural disaster-induced displacement.
