Short Answer - Open Response Oakridge - O.S.S.L.T. Prep Short Answer - Open Response

Period 3 - Short Answer (Open) Learning Goals: You will be able to analyse and discuss short answer exemplars You will be able to write a short answer response

Short Answer - Open

Looking at an exemplar... Read the paragraph answering the prompt: “Suggest one improvement that could be made to your school building or grounds. Use specific details to explain why it would be an improvement.” What do you notice about the features and components of this short answer response? Use a highlighter and/or make notes in the margins to indicate what you notice.

Looking at an exemplar...

Short Writing Task (Answer in full and correctly written sentences.) Suggest one improvement that could be made to your school building or grounds. Use specific details to explain why it would be an improvement. I think that one improvement that could be made to my school grounds is to renovate the football field. This would be done by grading the field property to get rid of bumps and holes, and then laying turf. Lights could also be installed so games could be played at night. These renovations would improve the attendance at games, foster student interest in playing field and team sports, and build a sense of community through sports. These are reasons why upgrading the football field would be an improvement.

Did you notice the following things while reading and discussing the short answer response? Does the first sentence answer the question (use keywords to formulate the first sentence) Is the paragraph a minimum of three sentences in length? Does the author include 2 specific examples to support his/her answer? Does the author include a transition word between these details (e.g. another, also, as well…) Does the last sentence summarize the author’s opinion? Two more “tips” for writing the OSSLT news report: Plan your answer (in the space provided) BEFORE you start writing the news report (briefly set up your 5 paragraphs) Take time to re-read your short answer once you have finished and make any necessary changes

Writing an opinion essay... Now let’s practice...on wipebooks! Writing an opinion essay... Example topics: Should the school year be 12 months instead of 10 months a year? Should the minimum age for getting a driver’s license be raised? Is what you are learning at school affecting the way you live your life right now? Should the use of cellphones be banned at school? Should school uniforms be mandatory?

Use a T-chart to PLAN your answer (in the rough notes section): Of all the courses in high school, which one is the most useful and helpful for students? Point Proofs (2 examples/supports)

. Your turn! Using your t-chart to guide you, write your short answer response (on lined paper) Make sure to answer the prompt in the first sentence. Use 2 examples/details to support your answer. Use transition words between your examples. Make sure your response is 3 to 5 sentences in length. Make sure your conclusion restates your argument.
