How do the materials needed for life get in and out of cells?
Osmosis Problem Practice
Hyper/Hypo/Isotonic Solutions
Passive transport requires ___________ energy. What if:
EGG DIFFUSION LAB.
DIFFUSION. IS THE RANDOM MOVEMENT OF MOLECULES THERE IS A NET MOVEMENT OF MOLECULES FROM AREAS OF HIGH CONCENTRATION TO AREAS OF LOW CONCENTRATION.
Transporting substances By Sangarun sangchachat Diffusion Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low.
3.3 Cell Membrane Sponge: Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 29 Topic: 3.4 Diffusion Essential Question: Explain what a concentration gradient is and what it.
Take out your homework. Quiz Time!!! 1.What is diffusion? 2.What is osmosis? 3.Use the terms isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic do describe what is happening.
Aim #30: How does osmosis and diffusion compare?
Break into your lab groups and look at the 5 choose your transport cards on your lab table. Identify if the card is an example of: Diffusion, Osmosis.
Osmosis Review. 1. Hypertonic solutions Plant cells  the central vacuole loses water and the cells shrink causing wilting. Animal cells  shrink (plasmolysis)
10/28/15 Date:10/28/15Topic:Hyper/Hypo/Iso (tonic)Page # ___ Use the reading on your desk to determine if the cells below are in a hypertonic, hypotonic,
BELL WORK: Copy and complete the concept map below:
Warm Up Why do your cells need to transport “stuff”? What would be some things they would transport? Why do your cells need to transport “stuff”?
Please take out your homework.
Do Now: How did the concept of passive transport apply to our:
Key Question: How do you think things like water and food, which cells need to live, get into and out of cells? Initial Thoughts:
Cells and their environment. Tonicity (root: tonic) Used to describe the environment around the cell. Environment can be: HYPERtonic = more solute HYPOtonic.
Agenda 12/6—Day 5  Get out your lab books  Obtain a potato tuber  Put the tubers in order of how you think osmosis occurred based on the concentrations.
SiLENT DO NOW Read the lab when you are done  Explain how the solute will move according to diffusion.  Describe what the cells will look like after.
Solutions Review!!!. Important Vocab A solute dissolves IN the solvent A solute dissolves IN the solvent Solute  Sol_t_ (looks like the word salt) Solute.
 Write a summary of what is happening in the picture. Describe what a semipermeable membrane is in your own words.
Transport. Transport Basics Passive transport –Substances move along the concentration gradient –no energy required Active transport –Substances move.
Osmosis Practice. 1. Environment _____________________ hypertonic Water leaves the cell and it shrivels or shrinks.
Egg Lab CER Critical Writing.
Essential Question: How does water movement across the cell membrane affect the shape of the cell?
Tonicity The affects of Osmosis.
Osmosis Challenge.

GUMMY BEAR LAB

RESULTS

WHY? Why did the gummy bear in the distilled water swell? Why did the gummy bear in the salt solution shrink and harden? Did the color of the gummy bear have anything to do with it? What was moving? What transport is this? What solution do cells strive to have? Why?

What are these solutions? A? B? C?

If I added eggs to vinegar . . . When you add an egg to vinegar, hypothesize what you think will happen. Draw the egg for Day 1 before placed in vinegar.

Results . . . Describe what is happening . . . . Then draw the results of what happened to the egg on day 2. What process has occurred?

Egg in sucrose Hypothesize what you think will happen when eggs are placed in sucrose (corn syrup) solution & draw egg as it is for day 1!
