What do ESL Teachers do? Snowball Activity

Why are we pulling your students?

Are your students LEP, ESL, or both? An LEP student is one who has documented limitations in his ability to understand, speak, read, and write in English. A language other than English is listed on the student’s Home Language Survey The student is tested with the W-APT test (usually in Kindergarten) to determine whether he or she is LEP An ESL student is one who has been classified as LEP and qualifies for service in the ESL program. Parents can choose to accept or waive ESL services for their students, which does not change the student’s LEP status. It is possible to have students who are LEP, but not ESL. ESL is the service we provide, not the student

Service Levels for ESL Service levels are determined by WAPT and ACCESS test scores

Service Frequency

How do we plan? What do we do with your students? Can-do descriptors with names 1-2 Can-do descriptors with names 3-5

How can you help the LEP Students in your classroom?

Accommodations and Modifications Responsibilities of LEP Committee Responsibilities of Classroom Teacher Relationship of Modifications and Accommodations to Grading If daily modifications and accommodations are implemented correctly, students should not be receiving failing grades. Each school develops an LEP committee to make LEP testing accommodation decisions for students who qualify. Modifications and accommodations are assigned according to individual student needs. The LEP committee fills out the form, classroom teachers have input on the modifications and accommodations they will provide for students throughout the year. Any accommodations listed on the form must be provided to students daily over the course of the entire school year, not just for EOG or EOG tests.

LEP Grading Policy

ESL Teachers . . . Plan activities that support classroom instruction Teach the language of the Common Core using the WIDA English Language Standards Should be involved in determining special assistance for their students Should be involved in determining whether an LEP student should be retained
