When was the Treaty of Versailles signed? 100 When was the Treaty of Versailles signed?

ANSWER June 1919

200 The majority of the terms were decided by three main countries – which ones?

ANSWER Germany, Britain and France

300 What is the name for the money Germany owed to the Allied countries and how much was it?

ANSWER Reparations, £6,600 million

400 Name three of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles (not the reparations)

ANSWER War Guilt Clause (Germany to accept the entire responsibility for WW1) Armed forces limited to 100,000 army, 6 ships in the navy and no airforce The Ruhr was demilitarised Land taken away (e.g. Alsace-Lorraine) Anschluss (union to Austria) was forbidden

500 Many people in Germany hated the Treaty of Versailles and nicknamed the government what?

ANSWER November Criminals

100 What was the ‘Reichstag’

ANSWER Parliament

200 What was Article 48?

ANSWER This said that in an emergency, the president could make laws without consulting the Reichstag

300 The Weimar Republic elected their governments by using proportional representation. What is this?

ANSWER Instead of voting for an MP, people vote for a party – this would be reflected in how many seats in the Reichstag the party would have.

400 What were the main features of the Weimar Republic – there are six. You have to get at least 4 for all the points (100 per feature).

ANSWER Bill of Rights – guarantee of freedom of speech and religion, and equality All men and women over 20 could vote It was democratic: There was an elected president and Reichstag Reichstag made the laws and appointed the government Article 48 Proportional Representation

500 What was the main problem with Article 48 and proportional representation in Weimar Germany?

ANSWER Article 48 made it easy for a dictator (i.e Hitler) to make laws without the Reichstag legally. Proportional Representation meant that there was lots of small parties, no main strong party, and therefore nobody agreed. It made the Weimar Republic very weak.

100 Hitler tried to take over by force in 1923 by attempting to force other right wing parties to support the Nazis. This happened in a Munich Beer Hall. What was it called?

ANSWER The Munich Putsch

200 In 1923, there was a major economic crisis. What was it?

ANSWER Hyperinflation

300 Other than the Munich Putsch there were two other main rebellions in 1919 and 1920. What were they called? (100 points for each)

ANSWER 1919: Spartacist Uprising 1920: Kapp Putsch You could also have the Red Army rebellion in 1920.

400 Name three factors as to why various groups rebelled during this time?

ANSWER Dislike of democracy; wanted communism or an autocractic ruler Anger at the Treaty of Versailles Weakness of the Weimar government Social issues e.g. people were starving

500 How did the Weimar Republic survive; The Spartacist Uprising The Kapp Putsch The Munich Putsch?

ANSWER The government responded quickly and brutally; the deployed the army and crushed the uprising. The leaders were killed. The Kapp Putsch was an uprising by the paramilitary group the Freikorps. The government called on the workers to go on strike and halt production. They did and the putsch collapsed. Hitler was arrested and imprisoned.

100 What was the plan called whereby Germany received a loan from America? Hint

ANSWER The Dawes Plan

200 Who was Foreign Minister during these years? Hint

ANSWER Gustav Stresemann

300 One of the best things Stresemann did during these years was to change the currency. What was the new temporary currency called and why was it introduced?

ANSWER Rentenmark; to stabilise and strengthen the currency after hyperinflation – the deutschmark was worth nothing.

400 What other economic plan was adopted by the Allied powers in 1930 to regulate the repayments of the reparations, that was also one of Stresemann’s biggest achievements?

ANSWER The Young Plan

500 What does this picture refer to?

ANSWER ‘Dancing on a volcano’: the phrase Stresemann used to describe the Germany economy during the late twenties. It refers to how on the surface everything was much stronger, but actually it was all dependent on American loans. Should something go wrong it would be destructive for the German economy (as demonstrated by the Wall Street crash in 1929)

100 What happened to the votes for extremist parties, like the Nazis, during the years 1924-29?

ANSWER Support went down – both Nazis and Communists lost votes during this time.

200 What pact does this picture refer to? Hint, the pact meant that countries promised not to go to war with each other. + D

ANSWER Kellogg-Briand pact

300 What social reforms did Stresemann introduce to help the unemployed?

ANSWER Job centres and unemployment benefits Employment schemes

400 From where did Stresemann persuade the French to leave in 1924?

ANSWER The Ruhr. In persuading the French to leave, Stresemann persuaded Germans to get back to work and start making money again, meaning that they became one of the world’s biggest exporters.

500 Give three examples of names that you would associate with Germany’s flourishing culture in the 1920s?

ANSWER You could have: Otto Dix (artist) Paul Klee (artist) Marlene Dietrich (singer/actress) Gropius (architect) Erich Maria (writer) Fritz Lang (film-maker)

100 What colour ink should you write in

ANSWER Black

200 How many full questions should you answer?

ANSWER 2; Section A is ONE question with FIVE parts to it; Section B is ONE question with THREE parts to it – YOU ANSWER EVERY PART!!!!!!!!

300 In which section do you get a choice of questions?

ANSWER Section B – you only answer question 2 or 3 (not both – Jareen!)

400 How long should you spend on Section A and section B respectively?

ANSWER Section A: 1 hour 5 minutes Section B: 40 minutes.
