Natchez Ballet Academy Make-up and Hair Guide

Make-up Make-up is worn to accentuate your dancer’s features so that we can see her face from the audience. Stage lighting washes her face out, making it difficult to see who she is from the back of the theater. Contouring, shading and highlighting, her eyes and cheeks makes her features visible under the lights.

Eyes Natural colors are sufficient. Lighten the lid. Darken the crease. Highlight below the brow. Darken the brows. Apply liner to make the eyes look bigger. Mascara to darken the lashes. Line the top lid and extend the line following the line of her eye…don’t go beyond the eyebrow. Line the bottom lid following the eye line until it begins to curve up, then extend the line parallel to the top line. Fill the two lines in with white liquid eyeliner.

Hair Use a fine tooth comb or a soft bristle brush to control fly-aways. Use a bun maker to help create a perfect bun. Secure the bun with bobby pins. Apply hair net. Secure hair net with hair pins. Apply gel AND hairspray. The bun should be above the ears but not on top of the head unless asked to do a “classic” bun (low bun). No bangs, fly-aways or hanging hair. “Classic” bun…part the hair (your preference of where), bring hair below the ears to make the ponytail, create bun in low position.

Make-up Make-up should accentuate the natural features making then visible to the audience.

eyes Eye shadow that is natural that contours the shape of the eye

Cheeks Apply blush under the cheekbone so they can be seen from the audience.

Lips Lipstick should be RED.

samples Simple, clean and easy…

Hair Regular bun and a “Classic” bun.
