Argument Notes

Argumentative Essay Is a genre of writing that requires you to: Read texts and investigate a topic based upon a prompt. Collect, and evaluate different types of evidence. Establish a position on the topic and write that position or side in a thesis statement.

Difference between argumentative and persuasive ARGUMENTATIVE The purpose is to inform an audience with facts and relevant evidence that your viewpoint deserves consideration PERSUASIVE The purpose is to move the audience to action or to adopt your viewpoint using emotions and opinions

Irrelevant Evidence This is evidence that is extra or beside the point of the claim. It is NOT necessary to prove the claim. Just the facts

Author’s purpose The reason why the author is writing the piece of text. P I E D

Audience The people who will read the author’s piece of text and will hopefully support the author’s claim.
