Young Leader Training Module D Understanding Behaviour

Objectives: Understand different types of behaviour. Understand and talk about the causes and triggers which can lead to different types of behaviour. Demonstrate a number of tools or methods that could be used to manage behaviour. It’s always good to start with objectives so we know what we are going to be doing for the session. Talk through the objectives and remember to revisit them at the end to see if we have achieved Every young person in an individual. They can display a range of behaviours that can be both positive and negative A sudden noticeable change in behaviour may be due to a variety of underlying causes. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Objectives: Explain how Young Leaders can assist with manage behaviour in the section. Explain where they can get further assistance, and when to involve adults It’s always good to start with objectives so we know what we are going to be doing for the session. Talk through the objectives and remember to revisit them at the end to see if we have achieved everything. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Reflection: Think about the behaviour you have experienced as a young leader from the younger sections. Create a spider diagram of the behavior/ what happened/ consequence. In small groups discuss behaviour they have experienced, or been perpetrators of (don’t ask who/what etc), and what happened? Discuss what the causes of these behaviours were – boredom? Lack of understanding? Over excitement? Attention seeking? misunderstanding? Something else? (ie Additional needs – don’t go into that in too much detail, covered in a later module) Feedback to the wider group LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Different Behaviour Play a Game as a group. Now discuss the following points: Do you think the right methods were used to deal with the behaviour? Why? What would you have done differently? How do you think your section would’ve dealt with it? How would you respond to the behaviour? Play a game and ask one or 2 explorers to be deliberately disruptive. Leader in charge use a variety of different methods to deal with the behaviour. (Shout, ask them not to play, focus on positive behaviour) Discuss and write on your flipchart paper: Do you think the right methods were used to deal with the behaviour? Why? What would you have done differently? How do you think your section would’ve dealt with it? How would you respond to the behaviour? LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Different types of behaviour: Here are 4 different types of behaviours list the best way to deal with each behaviour: Vandalism Opting out/withdrawing Stealing Chatterbox It is important to reward positive behaviour How would you deal with the behaviour in your section? What methods would you use to respond to both positive and disruptive behaviour? What do you think works? What would you change or introduce? Feedback to the wider group LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Activity Mock Trial LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE Split group in to judge, lawyers, and jury. Scenarios are found in D1 Lawyers have 2 minutes to discuss their arguments to explain behaviour, then present their case to judge and jury. Lawyers consider: the reasons behind a young people behaviour What the triggers might be How the behaviour might be viewed in the eyes of different people. Parents, leaders, the public. Jury must discuss what action should be taken to deal with the behaviour. Jury consider: what the most appropriate method to deal with the behaviour is What can be introduced in the future. LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Activity- What is my role? In your groups write down: What is the Young Leader’s role in discipline? When should an adult become involved? How can the Young Leader influence behaviour as a role model? In groups create a list or a spider diagram This can be linked back to the methods they use now or that they think should be introduced. Feedback to the wider group LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE

Activity- Give it a go! How can you introduce these methods/strategies into your section? What are the advantages of focusing on positive behaviour, rather than reacting to disruptive behaviour? In groups get the young leaders to come up with a list of as many ways to recognise and reward positive behaviour and set standards for behaviour. Feedback to the wider group LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE
