Similes, Metaphors, and Extended Metaphors How to Describe: Similes, Metaphors, and Extended Metaphors

What is a simile? A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two different things Uses “like” or “as”

Some examples you may have heard before…

Foreigner: Cold As Ice Pink: Just Like Fire “You're as cold as ice You're willing to sacrifice our love You never take advice Someday you'll pay the price, I know” "Just like fire, burning out the way If I can light the world up for just one day Watch this madness, colorful charade No one can be just like me any way Just like magic, I'll be flying free Imma disappear when they come for me"

Practice I’m hungry like a _________________. You’re as fast as a _________________. _______________________ is like the feeling of having a snow day. ____________________ as a new car. Class example: _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________

What is a metaphor? A figure of speech which makes a comparison that is less obvious than a simile (there is no like or as) Typically compares two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics Example: The skies of his future began to darken Meaning: Darkness is a threat; therefore, this implies that the coming times are going to be hard for him.

David Guetta: Titanium Pink: Just Like Fire “Ricochet, you take your aim Fire away, fire away You shoot me down but I won’t fall I am titanium” "You‘re a falling star, you‘re the getaway car. You‘re the line in the sand when I go too far."

Practice Shall I Compare Thee to _________________? My brother was_________________. _____________ is a breeze. ____________________ is music to his ears. Class example: _______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________

What is an extended metaphor? A comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph or lines in a poem. Example: Shakespeare’s As You Like It “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts”

Halsey - Colors “Everything is blue His pills, his hands, his jeans And now I'm covered in the colors pull apart at the seams And it's blue And it's blue Everything is grey His hair, his smoke, his dreams And now he's so devoid of color He don’t know what it means And he's blue And he's blue” Throughout this song, Halsey uses the extended metaphor of color to describe her relationship and what is around her

Let’s practice!!
