Census Hub: current plans and timetable David Thorogood Population Unit

Disseminating the 2011 Census statistics using the Census Hub 17-18 October 2013 Disseminating the 2011 Census statistics using the Census Hub Review of the Census Hub Review of basic concepts and approach Phase 2 - an improved graphical user interface Timetable Dissemination Working Group

Dissemination Working Group 17-18 October 2013 Census Hub – key points 60 multidimensional hypercubes built on SDMX 2.0 (standard concepts and codes) data stored by NSIs EU28 and EFTA countries Hub design - communicating with data providers via SDMX Web Service No data processing no editing or aggregation no data validation by Eurostat User interface allows flexible extraction and tabulation of data based on user specifications Dissemination Working Group

Basic structure of the Census Hub approach 17-18 October 2013 Basic structure of the Census Hub approach Dissemination Working Group

Improving the Graphical User Interface 17-18 October 2013 Improving the Graphical User Interface Initial development of the Census Hub Focus on creating a stable and reliable infrastructure Consultation in November 2012 Census Hub not seen as user-friendly - unsuited for use by general public/non-expert user Main concern was the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the data selection mechanism within the GUI Dissemination Working Group

New development under Phase 2 17-18 October 2013 New development under Phase 2 User demand-driven data selection system not constrained by statistical production process (not limited by a lists of data sets and a fixed tree structure) Dataset will be identified automatically on the basis of user-selected statistical variables The current 2 data selection stages can be combined into 1 This approach is possible because of the high degree of harmonisation in the census variables Dissemination Working Group

Dissemination Working Group 17-18 October 2013 Phase 2 - overview of the data selection system Dissemination Working Group

Impact for national data suppliers 17-18 October 2013 Impact for national data suppliers No change to the data requirements or timetable for data preparation An improved GUI is expected to greatly increase accessibility of the Census Hub to non-expert users Higher visibility of national data provided for the Census Hub Dissemination Working Group

Dissemination Working Group 17-18 October 2013 Timetable Census Hub (phase 1) to be made available via Eurostat website mid-November 2013 (provisionally, depending on data availability) Deadline for preparation of the hypercube data end-March 2014 Phase 2 of the Census Hub with improved GUI expected in second quarter of 2014 publicity planned to inform potential users and promote the use of the Census Hub Dissemination Working Group
