Appeasement

In 1931 Japan invades Manchuria

1935 Italy invades Abyssinia (Ethiopia)

The League’s Response Condemns Japan’s action, and tries to negotiate a settlement; Japan withdraws its membership from the league. Voted to impose trade sanctions on Italy- but oil not included in the sanctions. Allowed Italy to continue its war.

Germany’s Expansion 1936 occupies the Rhineland (German speaking) The League of Nations, France and Britain allow this to happen.

Based on these pictures, how do you think people in the Rhineland felt about German reoccupation in 1936?

March 1938 takes over Austria (German speaking) Demanded the right to take over Sudetenland (mostly German) in Czechoslovakia.

Appeasement At the Munich Conference in September 1938 Britain and France agreed to let Hitler take over the Sudetenland after Hitler promises that this will be his last demand. Why might they have agreed to this? How do you think Czechoslovakia felt about this?

Danzig Rhineland Rearmament What does this cartoon tell you about the author’s opinion about the policy of appeasement towards Hitler?

1939- War Begins! March 1939 Hitler takes over the rest of Czechoslovakia. August 1939 Hitler and Stalin announce non-aggression pact Why would Fascist Germany and the Communist USSR decide to work together?

Non-Aggresion Pact: USSR and Germ Non-Aggresion Pact: USSR and Germ. agree not to fight each other and to divide Poland between Germ./Soviet Union.

War Begins September 1, 1939 Germany invades Poland. France and Britain ordered Germany out of Poland, and when Germany didn’t leave: France and Britain declare war on Germany.

Canada’s Response Remained isolationist throughout the ’30’s. Canada was not willing to take on Jewish immigrants fleeing from German persecution. Refused the St. Louis (with 900 jewish people aboard). Many of its passengers died in the concentration camps when it was forced to return to Europe.

Why would Canada not have wanted to get involved in European affairs?
