The Role of Men Let’s look beyond the idea that men are hunters and warriors: what role do they play in traditional Cree communities?

Learning from Rocky Morin We will watch 4 videos of Rocky Morin speaking about the role of men in traditional Cree society Can you write down some things he said that you think are important?

How did men serve their communities as hunters and warriors? (4:28)

Why did men model themselves after the moose? (3:33)

What is the importance of the drum and how does it relate to the roles of men and women? (3:21)

How has the role of men changed over the last 100 years? (2:12)

Activity Work together in groups of 2 or 3 to come up with the three most important points from each question Can you present your findings to the class? Teacher may use an alternative method to review and discuss!

Concluding Question How do you think the loss of men’s traditional roles has affected First Nations communities and what effect has it had on women?
