Introduction to Interpretation September 9, 2011

Events Humor Drama DUO Poetry (only available at CHSAA meets)

Step 1: Find a piece Printed and Published Books, Poems, Plays Some sources if you don’t have resources already: Children’s books Local and school library Drama department

Step 2: Cutting a Piece For new students, pre-cut pieces can be good: Brooklyn Publishers Consortium Publishing Monologues 10 minute cuttings anthologies To cut a lengthy piece, keep in mind: Tell a Story Beginning, middle, end Climax Cut so that you end with less than 10 minutes so you have time for blocking and introduction Words can ONLY be added to transition.

Step 3: Introduction Required Must include title and author May include background or some connection between theme and audience

Step 4: Memorization Not required for CHSAA meets Required for NFL meets Makes blocking easier

Step 5: Blocking No props or costumes Gestures and movement that suggest the action DUO—can’t look at or touch each other EXCEPT in the introduction
