About Me I am Mrs Lana Vargas, your child’s first grade teacher. This is my 30th year of teaching, 19 years of which were in the Philippines where I taught Reading/English Language Arts. My first year of teaching in Maryland in2006 was at Bladensburg ES as a Kindergarten teacher. My second and third year of teaching were at Benjamin Foulois ES as a fifth grade Reading/ Language Arts teacher. I was at Fort Foote ES as second grade teacher for four years. I left PGCPS in 2013 and came back in 2014 as a sixth grade Reading/English Language Arts teacher at Seat Pleasant ES and then first grade Math and Science for 3 years. Now, I am happy to be here at AJA to teach your children.

Behavior Chart Color Code Green- outstanding! Ready to learn Yellow - given 2 -3 warnings Orange- Unacceptable behavior , Student is given 10 minute- time out in the classroom Red- Continued unacceptable behavior; Teacher writes a note to/ calls up parent

Friendly Reminders Change of Clothes We ask that each child bring in a change of clothes (shirt, pants, socks and underwear) in case of an accident or emergency. The clothes will stay in your child’s book bag. Recess Your child will go outside most days (weather permitting). We suggest sending your child to school daily in solid black rubber-soled shoes. Birthdays Birthday parties are not allowed in the classroom.

Friendly Reminders Homework – please check folder regularly - given daily - separate homework for each subject Agenda Book – please check for behavior color, notes, reminder ; bring agenda book daily Parent Contact Information Please always make sure to update contact information.

Friendly Reminders Absences/Tardiness Tardy – Students should be in school at 8:00 to eat breakfast. They are considered tardy after 8:15 3 tardy = 1 absence Absence – Present an excuse letter upon return to school. Dismissal Please pick up your child promptly at 3:10 Please inform the school if the person who will pick up your child is other than the person in our record Uniform Solid black shoes, yellow shirt, khaki pants/skirt, solid black / white/ or gray sweater

Indicator on Child’s Work Report Card Equivalent Teacher’s Grade Book Report Card Equivalent Description 9 or 10 PR Proficient 90 – 100%   Student can demonstrate indicator independently. 8 IP In Process 80 – 89% Student can demonstrate indicator with minimal adult support. + 7 EM Emerging 70 – 79% Student demonstrates indicator occasionally with some adult support. 5 or 6 ND Needs Development 50 - 69% Student cannot demonstrate indicator.
