Global & Local Winds Chapter 15 Section 2
Bellringer What causes winds? If you open the valve on a bicycle tube, what happens? Why?
Bellringer What causes winds? Winds are caused by the unequal heating of the Earth’s surface, which causes pressure differences. If you open the valve on a bicycle tube, what happens? Why?
Bellringer If you open the valve on a bicycle tube, what happens? Why? The air rushes out. The air inside the tube is at a higher pressure than the air is outside the tube. Letting air out of the tube creates wind.
Demonstration: Wind
Global & Local Winds Explain the relationship between air pressure and wind direction. Describe global wind patterns. Explain the causes of local wind patterns.
Wind The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure.
Global Winds A combination of convection cells found at every 30 degrees latitude & Coriolis Effect produces patterns of air circulation.
Local Winds Moves short distances & can blow from any direction. Geographic Features: Shorelines Mountains These can produce temperature differences that cause local winds
