Estates-General Name for the legislature(law making) in France France was in trouble Philosophes were calling the King out Voltaire especially High debit Caused by helping America w/war Queen spent to much $$(Madame Deficit) King needs $$ and the 3rd Estate wanted more representatives

3rd Estate is now known as the National Assembly

Uprisings Occurring all over France Ppl were starving and running out of $$ 7/14/1789 a mob captures the Bastille Symbol of tyranny

8/27/1789 National Assembly issues the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen Ppl are born = and remain free and = in rights Gov gets its power from the ppl Gave everyone Free speech and the right to participate in gov Influenced by Enlightenment thinkers , English and American Revolutions

National Assembly Wrote a constitution that included freedom of religion and made France a constitutional monarchy

End of Monarchy Emigres help King Louis the XVI regain control France again enters war, this time with Austria King and Queen are beheaded Robespierre takes control of gov. Anyone against him was killed with guillotine “Reign of Terror”
