PS Jerry Pullar Edinburgh Case Management Unit Shared Death Process PS Jerry Pullar Edinburgh Case Management Unit
Background Study revealed Police Scotland were taking the lead in all attended deaths despite 60% of these being ‘medical’ deaths. December 2015 national protocol agreement reached between the Chief Medical Officer, COPFS and Police Scotland Implemented on 29/02/2016
Police Process Attend, enquire and establish facts of death If medical death, liaise with GP and share information. Ensure family are aware of subsequent process. If MCCD not issued, confirm with GP that death will be reported via SCI gateway.
Problems Delays in notification process Insufficient information contained within GP notification for PF/pathologist
Resulting in Police having to revisit the incident and submit full death report City mortuary at times exceeding capacity Doubling the timescales for body being released to family
Solution Attending officers will complete an enquiry sheet which they will e-mail to the reporting GP to include in their notification.
