Into The Death Zone Vocabulary

Into the Death Zone Vocabulary avalanche – (noun) A large mass of snow, ice, or rock falling down a mountain. Rescue dogs are trained to search for people who might be buried in an avalanche. crampons – (noun) Spiked plates attached to the bottoms of boots to prevent slipping when climbing on ice or snow. In the winter, this mountain is way too slippery to climb without crampons. crevasse – (noun) A deep, narrow opening in a body of ice or the surface of the earth. Victoria shuddered as she peered into the crevasse. It was so deep that she could not see the bottom. expedition – (noun) A long journey for a special purpose The geologist went on a 10 day expedition to Antarctica to collect rock samples. pioneer – (noun) The first person to venture into unknown territory. The Russians pioneered space exploration in the 1950’s. plateau – (noun) An area of high flat land usually on a mountain The largest plateau in North America is the Colorado Plateau. It covers about 130,000 square miles in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico an Arizona.

Would Mrs. Britz think this is correct? My dad was a pioneer because he was the first man to explore Antartica. Yes, pioneer is used correctly and is defined within the context of the sentence.

Would Mrs. Britz think this is correct? My leg got a crampon the trail making it easier to climb so I wouldn’t slip on the ice. No, crampon is not used correctly although weirdly it is defined in context. A good correction would be…. I wore crampons on the trail making it easier to climb so I wouldn’t slip on the ice.

Would Mrs. Britz think this is correct? I drove my expedition home. Nope….No definition of the word in context, plus it wouldn’t make sense to use the right definition in this sentence. Both are used correctly, both the vocabulary word means a special journey with a purpose not an SUV.
