THANKS Participants Conveners SERC Staff UT-Knoxville For taking time out of your busy schedules to join this workshop Conveners Dex Perkins, Univ. North Dakota Darrell Henry, Louisiana State Univ. Dave Mogk, Montana State Univ SERC Staff Sean Fox Karin Kirk Monica Bruckner UT-Knoxville Robert Gibbs for logistical support NAGT—for sponsorship. Please Join! NSF—for generous support

Workshop Goals Review where and how geochemistry is taught in the geoscience curriculum, as dedicated geochemistry courses and in other related courses; Demonstrate exemplary instructional activities including laboratories, use of geochemical datasets, computer-assisted learning, and other in-class exercises Consider how to best incorporate new advances in geochemical research into instructional activities; and Continue to create and review new instructional activities to support teaching and learning about geochemistry and establish plans for next steps in developing additional instructional resources

What to Expect Plenary sessions to explore the current state and future of teaching geochemistry Small group, focused discussions on topical issues and reviewing/planning instructional resources Demonstrations of effective instructional activities in geochemistry. Participants will share strategies for actively engaging students in the classroom and for providing effective and innovative lab experiences.

QUESTIONS? Now on with the program Dex Perkins will lead the first Discussion Session….

Small Group Discussion I What should students know after they finish a geochemistry course? Work in small groups at your tables Record your thoughts on the flip charts Make a list of the essential components of a model geochemistry course Report out after 15 minutes…

Small group discussion I How does a geochemistry class fit into the overall geology curriculum?

Small group discussion I How much of what they learn in a geochemistry class will they ever use again?
