Figure 1 The Vibrissae–Barrel Somatosensory Pathway Schematic diagram summarizing the major stages of the rodent barrel pathway. Sensory information from the mystacial whiskers of the face sequentially reaches the sensory nuclei of the trigeminus in the brain stem, the thalamus, and the primary somatosensory cortex. Each vibrissa is associated with a brain stem “barrelette” (Ma 1991), a thalamic “barreloid” (Van der Loos 1976), and a cortical “barrel” (Woolsey and Van der Loos 1970). PrV, nucleus principalis of the trigeminus; SpVo, spinal nucleus of the trigeminus pars oralis; SpVi, spinal nucleus of the trigeminus pars interpolaris; SpVc, spinal nucleus of the trigeminus pars caudalis; VPM, ventral posterior medial (ventrobasal) nucleus of the thalamus; and Po, posterior nucleus of the thalamus.
