Introduction to the Chrysalids Post-Apocalyptic Worlds

Eugenics Video Studies of human genetics have been tragically misused in the past. Followers of the eugenics movement, at its height in the early part of the twentieth century, believed that some people were genetically superior to others. They wanted to prevent people regarded as 'genetically inferior' from having children. As a result, many in the USA and other countries were forcibly sterilised, a practice that only stopped in the 1960s. Eugenic policies were also responsible for the Nazi atrocities committed during the Second World War.

Eugenics Handout Follow along as we go over the handout on eugenics. John Wyndham applies these frightening principles in The Chrysalids.

Context for the Novel Tribulation (a nuclear war) has destroyed most of the human population. This novel focuses on a community called Waknuk who is struggling to create a new life.

Think-Pair-Share What do you think life would be like in Waknuk since all technology has been destroyed by nuclear war and the only book salvaged from the past is the Bible?
