Kids Backpack News March 2019 Wellness Corner Car Seat Safety Sun Safety Using a car seat/child safety seat is the best way to protect infants and kids when traveling by car. Every state in the United States requires that an infant or small child be restrained, which is good because unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in children—most from automobile crashes. The best car seat for your child(ren) is the one that best fits the child’s weight, size, age and your vehicle, and it’s up to you to learn how to install a car safety seat properly, and how to harness your child for the drive. Guidelines for Choosing Car Seats include: Choose a car seat with a label that states that it meets or exceeds Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. Accept a used car seat with caution. Never use a seat that is more than 6 years old, or one that was involved in an automobile crash. Be sure to check the seat for the manufacturer’s recommended “expiration date”, and to contact the manufacturer for recommendations on how long the car seat can be safely used, and if it has ever been recalled. Forward-Facing-Only Seats The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants and toddlers ride in a rear-facing seat until they reach the maximum weight and height limits recommended by the seat’s manufacturer. Some small children can stay rear-facing until age 3 or 4. Forward-facing car seats are designed to protect children from 20-80 pounds, depending on the model. All kids who have outgrown the rear-facing height or weight limit for their car seat should use a forward-facing car seat with a full harness for as long as possible. Booster seats that rely on the car’s adult seatbelts should only be used when the child exceeds the height and weight limit for their forward-facing car seat. Car seat set-up One of the problems with installing safety seats properly has been incompatibility between the car seat and the vehicle. The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system was designed to make installation easier because it does not require the use of the car’s seatbelt. You should only use LATCH in seating positions recommended by both the vehicle and car seat manufacturers. It’s also important to read the entire child safety seat manual before use, and to make sure that all straps should fit snugly on your child, and the straps should be flat, and not twisted. In winter months, heavy coats and clothing should be placed over your child after being harnessed in the seat. Please contact Jefferson County at 920-674-7465 for additional information. As Spring starts to approach, it’s a good time to start talking about sun safety for outdoor sports and playing. Remember these tips as the sun starts shining more and more: Wear sunscreen with at least a 30 SPF rating. Re-apply every few hours and don’t forget your ears, neck and face The sun is strongest between 10a and 4p, so plan ahead with water, hats and sunscreen if you plan to be outside during this time Drink plenty of water when you are playing outside.
