SKEA PAC Drive 2019

Oregon Education Association Political Action Committee What is ? Oregon Education Association Political Action Committee PAC Board Training (Rebecca and Caryn, 60-75 min)

Participation = Power Education funding and policy Decision Makers= Politicians Process= Elections Educator interests= working and learning conditions

What we look for in candidates=educator interests Adequate funding to achieve smaller class sizes, ample resources for students and educators to succeed Commitment to equity Collective bargaining rights Protecting educator salaries and benefits

Bottom line? PAC drives give us: Victories = a stronger foundation to work with decision makers to exact real change in students’ and educators’ lives Leadership development/groundwork for further legislative and political engagement amongst members Collective power

Fundraising Drives: Important Things to Know Dues dollars do not support candidates running for federal, state, or legislative elections Only voluntary contributions to OEA-PAC are used PAC contributions are eligible for a tax credit of up to $50 for individual returns and up to $100 for joint returns FAQs (handout) Legal do’s and don’ts handout

What is the cost to join ? All contributions are strictly voluntary We ask members to contribute what they can afford Certified: $10/mo ESP: $5/mo

SKEA PAC Drive Goals for Raise the average contribution to $50 Increase the number of contributors to 250 (a 2% increase) Every building rep talk to at least 5 non contributors in their building/workplace

Next steps Use the individual membership forms to talk to those that are already contributing and see if they would be willing to contribute more Increase to $50 if not already Select at least 5 non-contributors and talk to them about contributing Return forms to SKEA at the March RA (if that’s too early then by the April RA)
