Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in virus-infected human islets. Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in virus-infected human islets. Forty hand-picked and size-matched human islets from each donor were inoculated with serotypes/strains of CVB (black circles) or uninoculated (black boxes; medium only). On days four to seven postinoculation, the islets were perifused with low glucose (1.67 mM) for 42 min, high glucose (20 mM) for 48 min, and then low glucose again. Fractions were collected at 6 min intervals and the secreted insulin was measured by ELISA. Islets were grouped based on the virus-induced islet disintegration in three groups: no visible disintegration (A), moderate disintegration (B), and pronounced disintegration (C). * p<0.05.
