We want students to learn Del Paso Elementary School Twin Rivers Unified School District Take about 30 minutes to present this to every classroom. Teachers can and should discuss each of the three personal standards prior to your visit.

Being at school is important Learning is important. For students to learn, everyone at school must be focused on what it takes to learn.

To ensure students are learning adults at school will Care about how each child is feeling Help students feel safe Listen to students when there is a problem Create an atmosphere for learning Do their professional best at all times Include yard duty, counselors, food service, secretaries etc. The more staff students know, and what they are supposed to do, the better. Can you name the adults here at school?

All students will Have the highest personal standards. They are Show respect Make good decisions Solve problems These three overarching themes cover any “class or school rules” . If there are specific negative behaviors in your class or at your site, please include them in the conversation covered by the later slides.

What does it mean to show respect? Please take a moment and think of what to show respect looks like. Think of what it sounds like. When is a time you have shown others respect? What does it look like when someone is NOT showing respect to others? Make these conversations age appropriate. When possible, role play both the good and the negative. Make a t-chart of the positive and negative and leave in the classroom.

Making good decisions Is an important part of being ready to learn. It means thinking about everything that could happen as a result of your action. For example….. What is a good decision? Talk to your neighbor about a good decision you have made recently. Have a personal example ready and fill in at the… give the students a couple minutes to generate ideas with a neighbor. If time, ask for some to share with the class.

Everyone may have a problem Problems happen to all of us. What is important is how we decide to solve that problem. What are some steps to take to solve a problem? Who is available to talk about solving problems? Write out the steps to making decisions and leave posted in the classroom.

What happens if someone isn’t doing the right thing? When someone chooses to do the wrong thing, there are consequences. We want everyone to be in school learning, but sometimes the wrong decision may result in: calling home, losing recess, seeing the principal, being sent home with your parents or even worse. What are some bad decisions to make at school? Share an example of what that looks or sounds like. Let students generate topics. If not covered, make sure to address issues of possible sexual harassment- include name calling and touching, drugs, weapons (real and fake) as well as fighting etc. Have the conversation be grade level appropriate.

Using your imagination..what would you do if…. Someone was pushing you in line? You found a toy gun on the playground? Someone was making fun of you every day? You saw someone standing alone on the playground? You saw someone was hurting someone else in the bathroom? Bring up the issue dangerous activities walking to and from school,in the bathrooms, and in playground blind spots.

You are important Each and every day at school is important and you are missed when you are not here. End the conversation reminding students how important and cared for they are.
