CETPA Conference Indian Wells October 2007 Hi, I’m a Mac. CETPA Conference Indian Wells October 2007

Headline – PC World Mac Virtualization Software Due “SWsoft is preparing a beta version of Parallels Server virtualization and management tools”. -Wed., Sept. 26, 2007, 7:00 AM PDT

Summary Emerging Virtualization w / Intel Mac Virtualized Windows Server X-Serve Parallel’s “Desktop” Product Apple Inc., “First Enterprise Level Implementation of Parallels Based Server Virtualization of Windows” Based on emerging technologies, the IT Department made a solution to simplify management of both Macs and PCs at all schools, that according to Apple Computer, is a national first in terms of a large scale enterprise implementation. The ABC Unified solution is going to be highlighted on the Apple Inc. website as an "Apple Success Story". At the start of district Computer Refresh Cycle last year, over 6,000 district instructional computers were "unconnected" to the IT Department and therefore could not be "remotely" managed nor supported from the central office. ½ the district computers were Mac, the other half PC, which would have required installation of two separate networks that did not communicate with each at twice the costs and twice the IT staff support time. ABC Unified purchased a powerful Mac server for each school site that can run both the Mac Operating System and the Windows Operating system simultaneously. Testing proved this solution to be very effective. The solution cut the potential hardware costs in half across the district by eliminating the need to buy a PC server for each school site. The Mac server solution achieved the following for all Mac and PC users: 1) hardware costs required to support users was cut in half, 2) a single standardized infrastructure was installed throughout the district to simplify IT maintenance and allow for a unified staff development effort across the district, 3) Mac and PC users can save their work to "digital lockers", 4) IT staff can connect Macs or PCs to correct issues over the network without having to physically drive out to the school site. Colin Sprigg, Americo Crespo and Chi Tran are presenting their project at the CETPA Conference (California Educational Technology Professionals Association) in Indian Wells on October 10.

Environment 6000 Instructional Computers Schools were Islands! ½ Mac & ½ PC 60% were older than 4 years of age Schools were Islands! non-standardized & unconnected no central management District Refresh Cycle $5,000,000 / 5 Years 5% for Infrastructure

Environment T1’s to (29) Schools Fiber within Schools Zenworks Synchronize, Ghosts (all over the map) Sites were on their own At the start of district Computer Refresh Cycle last year, over 6,000 district instructional computers were "unconnected" to the IT Department and therefore could not be "remotely" managed nor supported from the central office. ½ the district computers were Mac, the other half PC, which would have required installation of two separate networks that did not communicate with each at twice the costs and twice the IT staff support time.

Environment What’s the problem? 1. Aging Infrastructure 2. Poor district support for instruction 3. Schools’ time/energy misplaced on: attaining equipment repair / maintenance old equipment

The Problem What do we do with 3000 Mac’s / 3000 PC’s? install (2) different support infrastructures? standardized entire district to one platform? The IT Department felt strongly that schools should maintain the ability to choose their platform of choice (Mac or PC), and therefore eliminated the possibility of telling district schools they had to be either one platform, or the other.
