Make A Ten Addition Strategy By Justine Buonovolonta Resource Room Teacher Wood Park Primary School
This lesson requires the understanding of all the ways to make 10 This lesson requires the understanding of all the ways to make 10. ***Tip: Print this slide to use as a reference.*** In school, we play, “I say….you say” and students have to think about the number that adds to make 10. “I say 3...you say…..(7)” “I say 5… you say…. (5)” “I say 6…you say ….(4)”
***Tip: Print this slide to use as a reference.*** Tens frame: This should be used if you child needs more concrete support.
8 3 5 Key Vocabulary To Use With Your Child… Benchmark 10: A two digit number ending with a zero, such as 10, 20, 30…80, 90 Decompose: To break a number apart into 2 numbers that add up to the number. 8 can be decomposed into 3 and 5. (See below) Number Bond: A mental picture of the relationship between a number and the parts that combine to make it. (See above) 8 3 5
Other Strategies To Consider… Number Line/Hundreds Board Counting On
Let’s Try Something NEW…. Building Our Mental Math Stamina 37 + 8 = Think about the 7 ones in the number 37… How many more ones do you need to get to the next benchmark ten? (ans:3)
If this is tricky for your child…. 37 + 8 = 3 Consider using the tens frame and red/yellow chips. Place 7 red chips in the frame and then count how many more chips are needed to fill the frame (to make 10).
37 + 8 = 3 5 So, decompose 8 into two parts… where one part is 3… and the other part must be 5. (3+?=8) (The two parts must add up to the original number/whole.)
37 + 8 = 3 5 Now add the 3 ones to the 37 to get to the benchmark ten of 40. 37+ 3 = 40 Then add the remaining ones to 40. 40 + 5 = 45 So, 37+8=45
Thanks for learning and lending a helping hand!
That’s All Folks!
